GPs to have fibromyalgia training to help the millions of sufferers in the Uk

The Issue

Fibromyalgia is a chronic, widespread, musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder for which the cause is still unknown and their is no cure for the condition either. It affects at least one million people in the UK alone and apart from the fibromyalgia, we all have one thing in common - we all have GPs who don't believe in or even acknowledges that fibromyalgia exists because "pain is a subjective symptom". The only people who have any real knowledge at all are rheumatologists and it can take up to six months to get an appointment, so we have to depend on GPs to help us "cope with the condition" but they can't do that when they have no idea about the condition and try to compare it to other illnesses. It is impossible to do this because the condition is nothing like anything else and affects each person differently. We know our own bodies better than anyone, yet every time we tell a GP what is going on, we get fobbed off and told that it can't be happening and made to look like it's all in our heads. The list of things that we can't do gets longer every day and with a condition that makes us exhausted all the time, we don't have the energy to fight the GPs for the help we desperately need. They are meant to be there to help us, but their lack of knowledge and training makes it impossible to control the condition enough to be able to reduce the pain and other symptoms just to be able to get up in the morning. So many of us would love to go out and work, meet up with friends or even just have fun without being in agony all day every day. Fibromyalgia has been referred to as "death by a thousand needles" because it feels like we are being tortured from the inside out. All we ask is that all GPs in the UK are given proper training about fibromyalgia so that the 1.5% of the UK who suffer from this debilitating condition can have a life rather than an existence of being trapped and tortured by our own bodies.
