Government review of Airbus UK's decision to make Guidant Global employees redundant.
The Issue
We, the employees of the Guidant Global workforce contracted to Airbus UK seek the intervention and support of the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy the Rt Hon Alok Sharma.
The employees of Guidant Global, contracted to Airbus UK seek your intervention regarding the decision to provide an HR (1) Notice of Collective Redundancies to the employees of Guidant Global and we seek a review of the decision made by Airbus UK to place at risk of redundancy the workforce of Guidant Global with effect from the 27th April 2020.
Over the course of the last four to six weeks the Guidant Global workforce have been described in a variety of both national and local media outlets as “Temporary” and “Agency” workers and whilst it is true that the Guidant Global employees are a contracted workforce, the use of this terminology is deliberately derogatory, designed to diminish the significant contribution that the employees of Guidant Global have made to the success of not only Airbus UK but Airbus as a whole over the last decade.
The definition of Temporary is “lasting for only a limited period of time”
The large majority of the Guidant Global workforce of the Airbus UK Broughton, Flintshire Plant are entering their 8th, 9th and 10th years with the company and there are very few employees if any, that have been employed by the company for less than five years, this is not a temporary workforce.
This notice period is with effect from the 27th April 2020 and gives the employees of Guidant Global a minimum 45-day notice period.
Under the current government guidelines regarding the job retention scheme the government has extended the period to which the scheme will run until the end of June 2020.
Mathematically, taking into account the date from which the notice has been given and the 45-day notice period, the employees of Guidant Global will potentially be made redundant prior to the end of the government job retention scheme.
To quote the Gov.uk website page regarding the Job Retention Scheme,
‘The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme forms part of a collective national effort to protect people’s jobs”
It is plainly clear that the job retention scheme is to be used to support businesses and as titled, retain jobs.
