Rt 88 Rural Delivery Change- Mailbox locations
The Issue
Please consider signing even if you do not live on Washington Pike/ Rt 88 (Bealls Ridge Rd) but are familiar with it.
Since we moved to Bealls Ridge Rd in 2015 there has been constant traffic from Gas companies, Charter Buses, Motorcycles, Semi-trucks and daily drivers; residential and commercial. The traffic amount can vary depending on the time of the year; however, the turns and speed will always remain the same.
In 8 years, it has been very intimidating checking our mailbox, having to cross the road to get our mail, due to traffic not obeying the 45mph speed limit. The section of road in front of the main stretch of 10 houses is very narrow with turns on either side.
Trucks are always using their engine brakes. The blind turn offers no breaking capability fast enough to reduce any pedestrians from getting hurt or killed.
In just the past couple of months we have seen multiple accidents during all hours of the day. Drivers running off the roads hitting houses, postal vehicles being ran off the hillside and state vehicles mangling mailboxes.
Please consider the safety of the residents and your fellow neighbors over the ease of moving the mailboxes on the west residential side of the road and changing the postal route. We feel that moving the mailbox for our safety and our neighbor’s safety should be declined or questioned in any way. An SUV into someone’s home and retaining wall, could have been far worse. Who will be responsible for medical bills due to injuries if this request is declined?
Note: We have verbally requested our mailbox be moved to our side of the street on several occasions within the past 8 years. We have been repeatedly told by the post office nothing could be done. This last instance (the third time losing our mailbox and post) we spoke to the postmaster from the Wellsburg Post office - Brendan Sheehan and he advised "nothing could be done".
This has been a severe safety issue. We have a community of elderly as well as young children. All we are asking is to move our mailboxes onto our properties. We understand the current route does not include going south on 88 from McAdoo Ridge Rd intersection. However, the portion of 88 that needs this consists of 16 homes within a .5-mile stretch.
We will also be gathering paper signatures from those who cannot access this petition.
Attached are the photos from an off road incident in Oct of 2023 and the state vehicle that demolished our mailbox Nov 2023 *note the inability to have a clear view of oncoming traffic.
