Since Airtel has already taken back the VOIP extra costs the things to be concerned about:-
1.Airtels statement that we have taken this back because TRAI has agreed on a consultation paper which we hope will work out on a settlement formula that works for all, comapnies and consumers alike.Well that statement itself shows the confidence of Airtel that they are almost sure taht a regulation could be in teh offing beneficial to them.
2.The statement by TRAI cheif stating that "We are not here to protect net neutrality as this is not for us to decide. What Airtel did is against net neutrality but not illegal either".This statement sort of explains the position of TRAI from the first.
It is after this statement to the media That AIRTEl withdrew the VOIP charges and made the above mentioned Statement.
Now the effects:-
1.Once this is made into some kind of law or better allowed by TRAI,we may see all the operators who were on the hold now bringing packs to increase revenues and jacking up data prices to make it unviable and make subscribers choose their packs.
2.This doesnt remain limited to mobile providers. All ISPS would follow suit and slowly you will have A-la carte plans apart from the usual Broadband plans like on a DTH company website.
3.Going forward for e-commerce,games,Video Streaming sites etc we will have seperate packs as once the net neutral principle gets shot down you can then use the loopholes in the law to slowly bring othe roperations in its ambit and our country is unchallenged in its capacity to make laws riddled with gaping holes.
4.With such packs a you -tube would beat a small video streaming firm,an Amazon could beat a flipkart or Jabong etc.Wats app may be able to stop an indian app from growing. There are really endless possibilities that you can imagine
What we stand to lose:-???
Well the internet itself and our telcos and regulators would decide what ,how and when we should browse.
