Puppy Mills are usually large-scale breeding establishments that breed and sell a variety of dog breeds at a large scale. Though a 'puppy farm' may not sound like the most harmful thing, it can come as a surprise that the puppies bred and growing up in these establishments are immensely impacted by their living conditions. Hidden away in large sheds are cages, many dogs develop social or behavioral problems, countless illnesses caused by not receiving veterinary care or filthy living conditions, often not given proper bedding, food, water or care. Dogs in puppy farms are treated like objects that are only useful for the gain of money. Adult dogs are kept in a constant state of pregnancy and constantly have their own kin ripped away from them again and again which is a mother's nightmare. When adult dogs can no longer produce puppies, they are killed, along with the other puppies that are not sold. Sadly the cruelty inherent in puppy mills can be legal even though this treatment is inexcusable. Only fifteen percent of puppies purchased off the internet or brought in pet shops come from registered breeders. A way to stop the inhumane treatment of dogs in puppy mills is by raising awareness, ceasing to support puppy mills across the globe and adopting from shelters. Due to the cruelty inflicted in puppy mills, does humankind really deserve something as magnificent as dogs?
