Uber threatening to pull out of Toronto if City Council passes new bylaws subjecting then to 1/2 the rules and regulations that hard working and long suffering drivers and plate owners in the city of Toronto have endured for their entire time in the business. Because of Uber's lax regulations and the fact the driver's do not have to carry "passengers" insurance and liability, it enables Uber to stampede the streets and take business away from homegrown Toronto taxi professionals. Yes, taxi professionals, who are fingerprinted regularly, who are required to attend continuous training, who pay insurance premiums in the tens of thousands of dollars, who lease a car only to suffer because of drastically reduced business. If Uber is forced to meet the new standards set forth, they are going to curl up and die. They will take their propaganda elsewhere. Good! A taxi plate in Toronto has gone down in value from the mid 200's to a measly $70,000. Not fair to owners who were mandated to drive the plate themselves for seven years before owning it. Not fair to taxi widows who cannot make a living...it's become harder and harder to lease a plate. Garages have empty cars sitting around, hurting their livelihood. All because of a hotshot, pushy company who takes their business away from them and calls it technology, not competition.
