When postcodes were instigated 50 years ago, the whole of the Orkney and Caithness areas plus much of Sutherland were included in the same postcode, KW.  Although Wick, Caithness was the postal town, this signifies Kirkwall in the Orkney Isles: in fact, Orkney postcode units are the last in the sequence.

In addition to creating the erroneous impression to delivery companies which immediately assume this is an island area, this is is one of the largest and varied postcode areas in the United Kingdom; and has the potential to cause confusion and strife when implementing services to the various unit areas because of differing needs.

Furthermore, the Caithness and Sutherland identities are distinct from each other as well as the Orkney identity which KW suggests.  A unique postcode for one or the other would strengthen their image as separate areas.
