'Eva just had a heart of gold'.
Eva Lasrini was heading to see her daughters overseas when she stopped communicating with those who loved her. A few days later he partner was detained at Melbourne Airport as he prepared to leave the country. He is now charged with Eva's murder.
The 53-year-old's body was found on April 4 at Little River in Victoria.
Eva is the 18th Australian woman killed in 2026. Last year we lost 79 women to violence - the year before 106 women were killed.
Leaving an abuser is near-on impossible in Australia - the barriers to safety are numerous without the manipulation of the perpetrator being added to the mix.
Some of the reporting around Eva's case has that under-current of victim-blaming, with one media outlet stating 'the couple continued to reunite and fight repeatedly'.
The reporting shows, journalists are still a long way off being capable of navigating the subtle nuances women face when navigating domestic violence.
Meanwhile, the alleged killer's social media account is jam-packed with misogyny - one of the key drivers of femicide across the world.
Regardless, Eva was, by all accounts, a strong and capable woman. She loved her family and friends and tried to live her best life.
“Eva just had a heart of gold,” a friend of Eva's told a media outlet.
“Eva was vibrant, full of life, ready to go on adventures, see things.
"She loved shopping, she loved her daughters."
"She was grateful to be in Australia and tried to make a difference while she was here – she studied, she learnt and whoever met her really loved Eva and liked her a lot.”
