❤️SHE MATTERS: MELONIE McKAY❤️Melonie McKay meant everything to her children, her family, her friends and her community.
Today they are mourning a woman with a big heart. Melonie, a 53-year-old mother-of-three, was deliberately run down by a man (allegedly) who chose to use his vehicle as a weapon in her street in Reservoir, Victoria, last night. 
The man is (as always) known to her - this time, it is a neighbour.
Luke Rainey, 44, is charged with Melonie's murder. 
Melonie is the 10th Australian woman killed this year. I am monitoring two more suspicious deaths from the past week.
Last year, 78 Australian women were killed and 106 women were killed in 2024.
The thing about violence against women, is it takes many forms. Yes, most women die as a result of domestic violence but around 35% of victims are killed by people they know outside of the familial circle (for example, killed by neighbours). We do not nearly talk enough about associate violence and we talk even less about men using cars and other vehicles as weapons.
Most often women killed with vehicles get lacklustre legal outcomes.
Melonie's sister said she was "always caring for others and putting her loved ones first."
"My sister meant the world to our family," she sad. 
"The conflicting emotions we feel — grief, anger, confusion — are overwhelming.
"Trying to understand why something like this happened … only adds to the pain."
