I greatly appreciate your adding your signature with over 150,000 others to the petition for a royal commission into unlawful deaths of women and girls.
I was elected to the Federal seat of Kooyong on May 2022 on a platform that included equity and inclusion. I take gender equity extremely seriously and am continuously pushing for measures that improve the safety of women. Some of the measures I have achieved since 2022 include:
- Successfully advocating for more funding for family violence and women’s legal services
- Speaking out in Parliament against financial abuse, a form of domestic violence suffered by an estimated 600,000 Australians and affecting 90 per cent of women seeking help from domestic violence services
- Calling for coercive abuse to be recognised across Australia as a form of violence against women (to follow Tasmania's innovative legislation)
- Successfully pushed for appointment of a national student ombudsman to ensure safety of women on university campuses
- Securing a Senate enquiry into the ‘Respect at Work’ legislation which supported my amendment- which was subsequently adopted by the government- to better address legal cost issues for sexual violence survivors. The amended legislation passed in 2024.
Family violence is prevalent across all levels of society and is intergenerational. My constituency is one of Australia's most prosperous, but in the year to March 2024 over a thousand family violence incidents were reported in the City of Boroondara (the largest local government area in Kooyong). Half of those involved partners - a third were witnessed by children. We know that a lack of access to safe housing prevents many women from escaping violence or pushes them back into violent homes, increasing the risk of femicide.
Acts of violence against women have become a critical issue in our society. Almost every week we hear of yet another killing of a woman by someone that she knows.
Considering the number of Royal Commissions we have held recently in Australia, it’s long past time that legal and social experts examine the social scourge that is violence towards women.
