Block the redevelopment of the Regal Theatre

The Issue

CNM Estates have revealed disastrous plans for the redevelopment of the interior of the Grade II listed former Regal Cinema and Variety Theatre (later ABC cinema, then Coral/Gala Bingo), which would see the complete demolition of significant parts of the building and drastic subdivision of the currently fairly well-preserved auditorium, providing a very small cinema in the balcony while the remainder is occupied by retail, office and apartment space. The developers claim that this is the only viable use for the building, but has done no research into alternatives: had they done so, they would be aware of similar and larger such 1930s supercinemas which operate to this day as multi-purpose arts venues.

This is one of the most significant survivors of Robert Cromie's designs and must not be allowed to be butchered thus. An alternative plan is being developed for its restoration as a conference and performing arts centre under the aegis of what will in time become a charitable trust, as per the Stockport Plaza, the manager of which is, along with the Cinema Theatre Association, assisting in the development of this plan.
