At council questions last week we asked the council to stop £89 million of its pension fund being used to support the fracking and fossil fuel industry. In short their response was no. "It should exercise its investment powers in a manner directed towards what is best for the financial position of the fund". It's all about the money.

It was a disappointing response but not a surprising one. The response also cited how the fund had been engaging with companies such as Shell, who it was recently revealed have spent over $1 billion lobbying governments against the effects of climate change.

We won't let this news deter or silence us from getting the council to change its position on a climate emergency. The aim is now to reach 2030 signatures to present at the next available opportunity, which will be the June council meeting. 2030 is the year we need to be carbon neutral by. Hopefully it will also be the same number that will get the council to do what is their duty. Thank you for your support. We ask that you share the petition to help us reach the target.
