Protect International Student Rights

Protect International Student Rights
The Issue
As an immigrant who came to the U.S as an F1- International Student I condemn the discriminatory and inhumane legislation impacting International Students in the United States. On 07/06/2020 US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a modification requiring International Students to return to their home country or risk deportation if their universities offer online classes only. This change will impacting up to 1.2 million International Students currently in the U.S and thousands more who have plans to pursue education in the U.S in the fall. Further, current travel restrictions in light of the COVID-19 pandemic makes it doubly hard for international students to return to their home countries. International students face tremendous odds to immigrate to the U.S, separated from their families, coping with culture shock while paying twice the tuition fees compared to U.S counterparts, contributing $45billion dollars to the U.S economy in 2018. In today's globalized world, International students posses unique international experiences, and cultural diversity that add to the depth and richness of learning in our classrooms. They are good for the economy and should be protected to pursue their dreams by attending online classes, face to face or hybrid classes just like their U.S counterparts. Hostile policies with unnecessary restrictions could make other countries such as Canada and Australia more attractive for international students; a huge loss to the United States. We call upon ICE to lift these restrictions that place undue burden, stress and anxiety on students and their families. ICE should take into consideration the huge contributions of International Students and lift the modifications that alienates International Students interested in pursuing education in the United States. Failure to afford International Students the same opportunities as their U.S counterparts is discriminatory and inhumane.
