The Issue

Dear Ross Neighbors,

We are reaching out as fellow residents who care deeply about the heart of our town—Ross Commons.  The field and grass area at the Commons have become increasingly worn, uneven, and difficult to use for families, children, and community activities.  As the most visible and well-loved public space in Ross, the Commons deserves the care and attention needed to make it safe, functional, and beautiful again.

For many years, Ross Valley families have done their best to work around the field’s chronic issues — drainage failures, uneven playing surfaces, safety concerns, and the inability to host consistent, high-quality practices and games. The Town has understandably attempted incremental, band-aid improvements, but these temporary fixes have not resolved the underlying problems. We now have a clear opportunity to stop patching and start building something that will serve Ross children and families for the next 50–100 years.

We are launching an online petition to show the Ross Town Council that residents strongly support renovating and upgrading the field. Our goal is to demonstrate that this project is a true community priority and that improved turf, grading, drainage, and maintenance would benefit everyone who uses this shared space.

Upgrading the field will help:

  • Create a safer and more accessible play area for kids
  • Support school use, youth sports, and community events
  • Improve the overall aesthetics of the Commons
  • Reduce long-term maintenance and repair costs
  • Preserve this special gathering place for future generations

Many local community organizations - RPOA Ross Auxiliary, Ross Valley Little League, Ross PTO, Ross Foundation - have already voiced to the Town of Ross the desire and partnership to improve Ross Commons.

If you believe Ross Commons should be restored and improved, please take a moment to add your name to the petition. Every signature strengthens our message and helps move this project forward.

Please also consider sharing the petition with neighbors and friends to help us reach as many Ross residents as possible.

Thank you for supporting this effort to improve our town’s most cherished space. Together, we can encourage the Town Council to take meaningful action on behalf of the community.

I believe that at the February Town Council budget meeting the Council will be discussing current and future budget items including the need for and the cost of revitalizing the Ross Commons. In the meantime, I’d be happy to meet with you to hear more about the Ross Commons Revitalization Project. Best regards, Teri

As the Director of Public Works, I am perhaps the point person responsible for maintenance of the Ross Common. This is not an easy issue to resolve with just a benign, feel-good petition of support. Of course the field needs a renovation effort, but it is a unique Town asset in that the residents want it to be a multi-use field for any number of activities, including an unfenced and unregulated area to let their dogs run without a leash, their kids to play little league, K-8 sports and bicycle activities, and have a leisure spot to sit down and enjoy the atmosphere. I do not know of any publicly owned grass field that allows all of these types of uses together in one spot that is in better condition than Ross Common is today. Until the Town has an understanding of the uses and restrictions acceptable to the end users, it is very difficult to move forward with a solution that makes fiscal sense. _______________________________ Richard Simonitch PE, PLS, CFM Public Works Director/Town Engineer Ross, CA 94957 (415) 453-1453 ext. 115
