We have now reached a milestone in a journey that began with one dog and one simple belief: companion animals deserve to have their well-being considered.

Rosie's Law, the Companion Animal Custody Equity Act (HB4540), has officially been signed into law.

This was never about the number of signatures. It was about the people behind them.

Thank you to every single person who contributed to this campaign through your donations, sharing posts, contacting legislators, and adding your signature to the petition. Every act of support mattered more than you know.

A special thank you to our primary sponsor, Representative Barbara Hernandez, State Senator Linda Holmes, and the many co-sponsors who helped move HB4540 through the Illinois General Assembly. I am also deeply grateful to Governor JB Pritzker for signing Rosie's Law into law.

Special recognition goes to our Policy Outreach Coordinator at the Rosie's Law Initiative, Hassan Mustafa, for being the bridge that connected so many people throughout this journey. Thank you, Shamim Akbar, for your mentorship. Thank you to my friends and family for showing up with love and support after my beloved dog was forcibly removed from me and never given the opportunity to return to the human she had imprinted on.

At the same time, my heart carries another reality.

I recently learned that my 14-year-old puggle, Rosie, has reportedly been diagnosed with a malignant mast cell tumor. I continue to grieve that I never had the opportunity to say goodbye despite being her primary caretaker for half her life. I hope she is surrounded by care. I hope she is as comfortable as possible. Most of all, I hope she survives long enough for the law inspired by her story to also become a law that can help protect her.

For the longest time, I wanted to speak openly about everything that happened. I also felt it was important to respect the judicial process while it unfolded and allow that process to take its course.

With Rosie's Law now signed into law, I feel ready to share what happened to Rosie more fully.

The truth is, Rosie's story did not end when Rosie's Law was signed into law. In many ways, that milestone marks the beginning of a new chapter. It opened the door for me to finally tell her story in full, with the care, honesty, and integrity it deserves. My hope is that, through her story, others will see beyond the circumstances and find compassion for a little dog whose voice was never heard.

I am now accepting interviews and welcome opportunities to speak about Rosie's story, the journey that led to this legislation, and why companion animals deserve to have their voices represented when their futures are being decided.

I hope that together, we can remember Rosie, honor her legacy, preserve the truth that inspired this law, and continue giving voice to the ones who never got the choice but always deserved one.
