The MLA acknowledges how low-wage, contingent labor structure "over the last two decades threatens the integrity of the profession and instructional programs" (MLA Executive Council, February 1994). Yet, in its own pay structure, the MLA has behaved over the past two decades like a corporatocracy whose institutional integrity decreases with each increase in Executive Director salary (>$300K). We the undersigned petition the MLA to cap Executive Salaries at 4:1 ratio of the national part-time, non-tenure-track faculty salary average (currently $24K) so that monies made available with more reasonable salaries can be used for the improvement of the profession for all. Dues structures for underemployed part-time and non-tenure track full time instructors should reflect the average salary of $24K so that the major burden of financing the organization falls on those with the highest salaries.
