Although the Scottish Government has granted the beaver protected species status it also allows licencing so that beavers can be killed in certain circumstances. However, it has banned their transfer from areas where they are not welcome to new territories even where they could help reduce flood risks downstream and aid conservation work. It's easier to shoot a beaver or send them to England rather than to take them to a part of Scotland where they'll help wildlife and people!!

The reason given for the ban that first new protocols need to be developed to deal with any conflicts generated by beaver presence is spurious. One of the main tools used in resolving that conflict real, imagined or exaggerated IS moving beavers to areas where they will be a definite benefit in terms of reducing flood risk and creating/maintaining wildlife habitat! Only 12% of Scotland consists of higher grade agricultural land so there is far more scope for beaver to become established in low productivity areas that often require subsidy. Thereby eventually they would prevent tens of millions of pounds of flood damage to homes, businesses AND higher quality farmland downstream. They would be far more of a benefit for genuinely productive farms than be a problem for them - as long as they are allowed to be a benefit by moving them to more suitable sites first. This is currently banned!!!

Beavers are being vilified and potentially shot when we need thousands to help restore the land, create fire breaks in our highly flammable uplands and reduce the farms, businesses, homes that get flooded and the human misery that goes with it. Every beaver we have is very precious and it should be decades before we run out of suitable places to return them too. The Scottish Government needs to listen to more than a vocal and rather selfish anti beaver minority and review the general movement of beaver into appropriate areas which is now being considered in England.
