The novel coronavirus, or COVID-19 has spread to over 91,000 people worldwide and caused over 3,000 deaths. The death tolls and number of confirmed cases has already exceeded those of the SARS and MERS epidemics of the past, both of which have incited the closure of schools nationwide. While the virus can stay in the body for two or more weeks without showing symptoms, the pathogens still remain extremely contagious over this incubation period, often resulting in the rapid spreading of the virus without the knowledge of the host. In the past 4 days there have been 6 total deaths in the State of Washington with little to no acknowledgement by school districts but only by schools that have already been affected. Rather than reacting to a case when the damage could already be immeasurable, schools should take the initiative in order to prevent a potential breakout within the student population. After all, the safety of students should be of the foremost importance and should be taken into consideration before any other factors.

Throughout many countries, we have seen the same patterns repeat again and again with the only viable solution being to avoid large public places in order to limit the spread of the virus. With new cases spreading throughout the state it is impossible to predict when the infection may rise to an uncontrollable level. Governor Jay Inslee has put Washington in a State of Emergency and King County has also declared an emergency. Students may not have yet been affected by the disease as severely, but many pathologists have predicted that the disease has yet to hit its full potency.

We are asking the Issaquah School District Superintendent Ron Thiele to shut down the district before a massive spread of COVID-19 occurs. Multiple students have sighted sick students still attending school which has raised more concern over a virus spreading rather than their learning making school not their priority but worrying about a potential outbreak that can put everyone they know in harm's way. Accounting for all current speculated and confirmed cases, the Issaquah School District is in a surrounded safe zone that will be infected at any moment.

With this in mind, we urge the Issaquah School District to make a responsible decision to close campuses and cancel events in the hopes of limiting the spread of this deadly virus.
