Florida Satellite Internet for Cuba
The Issue
The humanitarian crisis in Cuba is continually escalating into genocidal conflicts between a historically oppressive communist regime, currently led by Miguel Diaz-Canel, and the impoverished cuban people. As they organically and peacefully organized protests throughout the island using Twitter and other social media as vessels of communication to exercise their basic human right to free speech, they were physically assaulted, targeted, and are being murdered in their homes.
Access to the state sanctioned internet service is constantly disrupted and does not permit for continued communication between individuals from neighboring towns or provinces. This has severely hindered their ability to organize or reach out to family. In spite of the calls to violence from Mr. Diaz-Canel, the cuban people continue to flood the streets in hopes of being heard not only across their island, but across the straight that separates them from freedom.
Ron DeSantis, Florida Governor, met with leaders of the cuban community in Florida on July 13, 2021 to discuss ways in which Florida may facilitate the calls to democracy in Cuba. Bringing Wi-Fi to Cuba from Florida is quintessential in the peoples fight for freedom. The Cuban diaspora and the people of Cuba are not asking for a war to be fought on their behalf, but we are pleading for the tools necessary to amplify the voices of the oppressed.
Governor DeSantis, we ask that you stay true to your commitment to help the Cuban people in their darkest hour. We ask that you openly explore this option and communicate with your constituents ways in which Florida is prepared to move forward.
