Give Florida women body autonomy! No mandated ultrasounds before abortions

The Issue

Section 390.0111 of the Florida Statutes clearly states that; "A termination of pregnancy may not be preformed or induced except with the voluntary and informed written consent of the pregnant woman... consent is voluntary and informed only if... B. The probable gestational age of the fetus, verified by an ultrasound, at the time the termination of pregnancy is to be performed."

Women in Florida who are trying to have an abortion are legally required to have an ultrasound performed.

This creates an undue burden for women seeking an abortion. This is a problem for many reasons:

  1. It is not necessary. Ultrasounds are not medically necessary for women seeking abortions. Expectant mothers who intend to carry their children to term are allowed to refuse ultrasounds, though often they do so against medical advice. Pregnant women who are going to give birth are given more body autonomy and choice than women who are seeking an abortion.
  2. Increases the overall cost of an abortion. Medicaid only covers abortion in 15 states Florida is not one of them. Women are required to pay for the abortion, and under this statute they are required to pay additional cost for an ultrasound as well.
  3. Creates a nightmare situation for survivors of traumatic events. Most ultrasounds in the earlier weeks of pregnancy are performed trans-vaginally. This puts a horrific amount of stress on women who are pregnant as a result of rape, sex trafficking, or incest.

Please sign this petition if you want mandated ultrasound out of Florida Law! Give women more body autonomy and  do not force women to undergo unnecessary and costly medical procedures!
