The results of the legislative elections in Romania must be respected by the Romanian President, Klaus Iohannis. According to political and constitutional practices, the party winning the elections must be invited to nominate a Prime Minister. Despite this fact, the President, whom according to the Constitution must remain impartial, has decided to personally get involved in the campaign and in the negotiations between political parties, publicly referring to whom must be in government. This controversial and non-democratic attitude was explicitly criticized in the preliminary OSCE report on the elections that just took place in Romania.

The results of the elections show a clear victory of the social democrats in Romania, PSD winning close to 30% of the votes, significantly ahead of the PNL, and the lead will increase in terms of Parliament representation after the redistribution. This gives the PSD the democratic legitimacy to be allowed to nominate a Prime Minister and to try to form a government. In this regard, we call upon the President of Romania to respect political, democratic and constitutional practices, allow political parties to discuss freely and accept the results of the elections by nominating a Prime Minister proposed by the PSD.
