Yet another trophy predator bites the bullet, this time a Romanian brown bear shot and killed in Transylvania in March this year... by a real royal Prince, no less.

But this is no fairytale.

17-year old Arthur was, according to environmental campaigners, Europe's largest brown bear, yet he was no match for a Prince from Liechtenstein.

Romania banned the hunting of large carnivores in 2016 and brown bears are supposedly protected by an EU directive, but problem animals can still be shot. Arthur however wasn't the problem and the hunting permit was allegedly delivered to "harvest" a female brown bear whose trophy value was evidently a lot less appealing than Arthur's impressive 592.8 points (600 being the maximum).

The Prince is reported to have paid 7,000 Euros. A bargain and a bagatelle for the privilege of shooting the Arthurian Legend. Still, it's nice to know that nature is, according to the Prince's office, "one of the fundamental concerns" of the family.

Quite how entitled individuals can travel for sport during a pandemic and derive pleasure from killing dumb animals is one thing (or a couple); but how such a large male could have been mistaken for a smaller female is another altogether.

An enquiry has been launched. Let's hope it gets to the bottom of this sordid affair.

In the meantime Arthur joins Cecil in no longer sleeping tonight.

Please sign and spread this petition in the hope that it will hurry the enquiry along and help ram another nail into the trophy hunting coffin.
