Bring back Fr Paul Morton to St Bride's CambuslangCambuslang, SCT, United Kingdom
Sep 9, 2015
The 2,037 signature strong petition was taken to the Diocese of Motherwell on 8th September 2015. Our current position and thoughts: Father Paul Morton has given his life for others. He has been there for the sick, dying, old, young, poor and vulnerable, in the bad times and good – a true disciple of God. His guidance, love and care stretches beyond St Bride’s in Cambuslang. He is there for everyone, without hesitation, regardless of religion or background – even in his time of need. The messages of support from across the world are testament to the amazing priest he is. He is greatly missed by those who have never doubted him and his absence leaves a huge void in our lives and the community. We have not forgotten what he has done for us and why, now, we are here for him. • The response to the petition has been overwhelming, mainly from parishioners but also the wider community. • Raising awareness through social media others, worldwide, have learned of the injustice and they too have shown their support. • We would like to thank those who have taken the time to sign the petition in person and electronically. We know that Father will be very humbled by the response. • You do not need to know Father to look at the circumstances of this situation and come to the conclusion that it is wrong, simply because it infringes on basic human rights. • In no other workplace would someone continue to be restricted following a thorough Police investigation that resulted in no case to answer to. • It is our opinion that Bishop Toal is prolonging the situation and in his silence is causing further upset, not only to Father but to those who love and care for him, who want to see justice prevail. • That is why we started the petition. We believe that Father Paul Morton has become a victim. • The recently published McLellan Commission Report has recommended the need for clear procedures to be incorporated into the revisions or rewrite of the Safeguarding Awareness and Safety Manual, for the accused and the accuser. It is important justice must be done and be seen to be done, with both parties protected by law. The Catholic Church also has its own Canon Law. Procedures under Canon Law, we believe, must be progressed with a preliminary investigation carried out by the Bishop of the Diocese. The McLellan Report recommends that no one Bishop should have autonomy, however, currently, it is our opinion that Bishop Toal is judge and jury. • Having collected over 2,000 signatures the Chancellor of the Diocese of Motherwell, Father Jim Grant, was contacted to arrange the presentation of the petition to Bishop Toal. • Bishop Toal refused to meet and suggested that we posted it to him. This is an insult to those who support Father and to those who are parishioners within parishes in Motherwell from their Bishop. • Pope Francis proclaims that Bishops should be amongst their people and not acting like princes on pedestals – where is Bishop Toal? • The Bishop declining to meet is, in our opinion, reflective of the lack of love, compassion and care shown not only to Father Paul Morton but to those who are personally affected by the trial Father has had to endure for almost a year. After all many emails and letters of concern and complaint to the Bishop remain unanswered. • Who is advising Bishop Toal? The Safeguarding Adviser for the Diocese, Bill Crawford, resigned as the McLellan Report was published? • Our heartfelt thanks to Fr Jim Grant for agreeing to meet with us to accept the petition on behalf of Bishop Toal . • We reach out now to Bishop Toal of the Diocese of Motherwell, that he will listen to the united voice of many and we pray that he will reinstate Fr Paul Morton to the parish of St Bride’s in Cambuslang without any further delay. Returning a good shepherd to his flock and allowing him and the parish to begin the healing process needed, together.
