A new federal policy could limit what Americans are allowed to buy for something as basic as internet access.

The Federal Communications Commission has moved to block new consumer Wi-Fi routers that are manufactured outside the United States. While the policy is being framed as a national security measure, it comes with serious consequences for everyday consumers.

Most routers sold in the U.S. today rely on global manufacturing. That means this restriction could drastically reduce available options, drive up prices, and make it harder for families to replace essential equipment when it fails.

This is not a niche issue.

Wi-Fi routers are the backbone of modern life. They power remote work, education, healthcare access, and communication. Limiting access to affordable, reliable devices risks leaving millions of Americans with fewer choices and higher costs.

Consumer choice matters.

Americans should be able to choose from a competitive marketplace, not be limited by broad restrictions that do not reflect how global technology supply chains actually work.

We recognize that national security is important. But policies must be targeted, practical, and balanced. A blanket restriction on foreign-made routers risks creating more problems than it solves.

We are calling on the FCC, Congress, and the Trump administration to roll back or revise these restrictions.

Any security measures should be narrowly tailored, clearly explained, and designed to protect both national interests and consumer access. Americans should not lose access to essential technology because of overly broad policy decisions.

Protect security.

But also protect choice, affordability, and access.

Americans should not have to wonder whether they can stay connected.
