The gaming world has changed and it’s about time the companies caught up:
I've been battling agoraphobia for a while and, as a huge fan of games since I was 9, they are the only thing that can make me happy when I’m feeling low. There has been many a time when games like Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto (GTA) are the only thing that help me get through a stressful day.
But something has always bothered me as a female gamer. Where are the female protagonists? Rockstar uses posters of women in bikinis to help advertise GTA and there are female characters in the multiplayer side of the game. But there is no female lead. I want Rockstar to consider changing this for a future GTA title.
Forty-nine per cent of gamers are now women yet most games still use male leads. I believe that it’s about time we take women out of the supporting role and show them in a new light.
I’ve played games all my life and seen them evolve. Recently we've seen Microsoft drop plans to restrict the sharing of Xbox One games after feedback from fans. This made me think that if enough people speak out about the lack of female leads we could make a positive change.
Whether you're a fan of GTA, a female gamer or just someone who think Rockstar Games should set a good example for the rest of the industry please sign my petition to call on them to create a female protagonist in their games.
