Allow or help set up a community based mod verification process for GTA V
The Issue
I love GTA V. I also love modding games.
It's fun, helps people who make mods get experience creating content for games and it adds hugely to the longevity of games.
Some games, like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series, have built in support for modding with their creator, Bethesda ,releasing a version of the developer tools to make it much easier to create content for the game.
Even games that don't natively support modding can have excellent fan made content created for them which extends the life of the game and kelps keep an active community around the game.
GTA IV is a perfect example of a game that still has an active community even though it was released in 2008.
That is partly because it is a great game but mainly because modders were able to create excellent new content for the game which kept it fresh, interesting and, most importantly, fun to play.
Another even earlier example, from Rockstar games, would be GTA: San Andreas from 2004. It has many amazing mods from Design your own mission to the popular multiplayer mod which enables multiplayer between all the games from the GTA III era. It is still a popular game with an active community because of all the great mods for it.
The problem with GTA V is that some people have abused the mods created for the game by using them online to ruin the game for other players. They have also potentially cost Rockstar money in lost sales by using mods to create in game currency, for themselves and others, sometimes going as far to force the created money into other players inventories without their consent, instead of earning it legitimately or purchasing it from Rockstar.
That is absolutely unacceptable.
It is these actions, by a minority of people, that have caused a huge number of complaints to Rockstar by people who are just trying to play the game but are being harrassed by people using certain mods maliciously.
This has also caused Rockstar to institute bans against anyone using, it seems, any mod whatsoever either in single player or multiplayer.
I understand the actions taken by Rockstar, given the circumstances, but i believe people who wish to mod their games should be able to do so as long is it does not have a negative effect on anyone elses game nor cost Rockstar money in lost sales.
I do not expect Rockstar to spend time and money vetting mods to see weather they are harmful to other players or not or weather they can be used online or not.
However i believe that a process could be set up, with Rockstars approval, within the community to vet mods and either approve or ban mods that are submitted.
This information could then be sent to Rockstar who could then update their cheat detection tools to ignore approved mods. Only mods that have been through this process would be authorised.
This could be done with very little effort on Rockstar's part as i am positive trustworthy volunteers from the community could be found with no problems.
This would allow those who wish to use mods to do so without fear of being banned while still protecting everyone from cheaters.
I hope we can get as many signatures as possible from both those who support modding and also those who are worried mods will ruin their experience as i believe such a system would benefit eveyone.
