Induct Salt-n-Pepa into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

The Issue

With truck gold ropes around their necks and a fire in their hearts to entertain, inspire, and slay the competition— three feminine figures emerged from the shadows and kicked in the door of the male dominated hip-hop industry.

The legend of Salt-n-Pepa was born on December 8, 1986. (30 Years!)

Hip-Hop aficionados have long branded the 80’s and early 90’s the ‘Golden-Era’ of hip-hop. And if that is the case, Salt-n-Pepa is the sparkling shiny finish on that block of gold. Long before the days of high profile social media platforms, Salt-n-Pepa commanded the attention of millions of followers by way of their air-tight rhyme flow, mass pop appeal, fashion, fun and unapologetic femininity.

They are the first female rap group to attain platinum status. They have since gone on to sell more than 12 million albums. Their brand of girl power and strong feminine artistry changed the hip-hop landscape and blazed a trail for numerous female artists and groups in pop, R&B, and hip-hop genres.

Included in their catalog of hits from five studio albums are such classics as ‘Push It’, ‘Shoop’, ‘Whatta Man’, ‘Let’s Talk About Sex’, ‘Expression’, ‘Independent’, and the Grammy Award winning hit ‘None of Your Business’. These songs have appeared on numerous film soundtracks and television commercials around the globe thrusting them far beyond the scope of just hip-hop. They have toured internationally on the strength of these records.

More specifically, their smash hit ‘Push It’ has a lasting appeal that made it an anthem for high school proms in the 80’s as well as the theme for a Superbowl commercial in 2015.

‘Shoop’, one of their trademark singles that was released in the Fall of 1993, re-entered various charts in February of 2016 on the strength of its placement in Marvel’s smash hit ‘Deadpool’ film.

Among their many achievements are a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group (1995), MTV Video Music Award for Best Electronic Dance Music Video (1994), MTV Video Music Award for Best Choreography (1994), MTV Video Music Award for Best R&B Video (1994) and in 2010 BET honored us with the ‘I Am Hip-Hop Icon Award’.

In recent years Salt-n-Pepa has reunited for several successful tours in the United States and abroad. In 2016, the 30th Anniversary of the influential group, the ladies are headlining the ‘I Love the 90’s Tour’, and in what is sure to be sweet music to the ears of old and new fans alike, they are finally back in the studio working on new music.

In the meantime, there is one grand honor that has eluded Salt-n-Pepa. The trio of divas has yet to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Please sign the petition if you feel that this iconic rap group should be listed on the 2017 ballad to be inducted in the 2018 class.
