The Issue

Rochdale sixth form college has removed their prayer room leaving many students at distress. Many students at the college are actively practicing Muslims and of other faiths aswell. For different faiths, praying regularly is an important part of religion. I know the college is really supportive of their students mental health .Many students find that prayer helps with their mental health and this would be a great way for the college to further support mental health as they do so already. We have been recommended by the college to go the nearest mosque however with winter approaching many students have found it inconvenient to go out in the cold weather and it may conflict with their timetable in many occasions so they won’t have enough time to get in time for their lesson. It has came to our understanding that the college doesn’t have a lot of room and this completely understandable .We suggest empty classrooms should be opened at lunch time or at specific periods .We also suggest Prayer passes should be imposed as it would help help control the amount of people in a room .The prayer room could be observed by a teacher if required .A reasonable time limit(10/15 min)  could also help in controlling the space. This change will help many students be comfortable in practicing their faith without disrupting their studies or without harming anyone .This change will remove students distress of missing their prayers if a prayer room is allocated .Our college is very accommodating to every type of different ethnicity ,race or culture .But we request more. This change will alleviate students and make them more happy .
