Calling for AISD To Allow Distance Learning To Prevent COVID-19 Spreading

The Issue

Dear Mrs. Bullock and Members of the AISD School Board:

1. We request immediate action to make a school district-wide transition from in-person classes to online instructions, in the light of the multiple confirmed cases of COVID 19 right here in Collin County and Dallas County.
2. We request for 2 weeks school closure immediately after Spring Break.
3 We request AISD to allow parents to determine whether to send or not send their children to school premises after the 2 weeks, during coronavirus pandemic.
4. We request AISD to allow the above parental decision (to not sent kids to school) as “excused absence.”

Kids can carry COVID 19 to the families where we have older parents and grandparents who could be impacted severely.

Many universities and middle schools have already switched to online learning in the U.S. Please see examples: Harvard, GSES Dallas, Jesuit Dallas, Ursuline Academy of Dallas, UNT, etc.

Dallas has canceled St. Patrick’s Parade & Festival and NBA has canceled games. We must stop and/or postpone gatherings here at school as well, especially for the two weeks after spring break.

AISD has issued a notice during the middle of sprint break, advising people traveled to CDC risk level 2 & 3 countries to self-quarantine before returning to school. However, Since we don’t know if EVERY person who already traveled to these areas will receive, read and follow the notification in time, (they are already in the middle of their trip and might not check emails daily during vacation), there is no guarantee that EVERY traveler returning from these areas will report and self-quarantine.

Also, many of domestic U.S. areas have already turned into coronavirus outbreak hotbed, such as New York, Seattle, and California. The first Frisco patient caught the coronavirus when traveled to California. (Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family). Many students and school employees traveled to domestic widespread areas during spring break.

President Trump as addressed the nation on 3/11/2020, called Coronavirus a “global pandemic”, and spoke about the “unprecedented response” that we must make to protect the American people.

Our way of life must change during the coronavirus pandemic. AISD must seize this window of opportunity NOW to prevent physical gatherings.
