Stop Ryerson's course FSN 402- Internship from being a paid course!
The Issue
FSN 402 is a required course for students in the Ryerson School of Fashion. Both Fashion Design and Fashion Communication students must complete 400 internship hours. However, many of us have realized it is disadvantageous as us students work to our detriment.
Many students must balance school, part time work, family life as well as these internships. Although most of us have started on our internships we have become aware that we are paying the school, when we go unpaid. With little to no supervision from the professors/instructors listed on the course outline, we are not being provided a teaching experience from the school itself. Also, there is no allotted time on our schedules, so the time is put aside from the student's individual complicated schedules.
Although Ryerson's School of Fashion could argue that job opportunities are presented to us via e-mail, many are not vetted for ethical issues or accountability. Some of these internships do not offer valuable experiences and are misrepresented in these e-mails. Therefore, this course poses a threat to the safety of the student community. The students are constantly working throughout the year, when there is little response during the breaks. Students sometimes are not even aware if the internship is valid for approval for this exact reason.
Majority of us are struggling with debt and payments for school projects. Whether it be $600 for an evening wear gown, or $5000 on our final collection, the School of Fashion is proving to be exponentially expensive, students are even stating that it may be one of the most expensive programs in Canada. It has already become uncontrollable along with the rise in tuition. Quite a few students even postpone their graduation date in order to gain the financial ability to complete their programs. The university experience should be more focused on education and opportunities provided to us due to our bachelors! We should not be forced to put financial debt before education!
If companies are not required to pay for free labour, we believe we should not need to fund the school for the FSN 402 course!
