The Origin of UpGarden
In 2011, the Seattle Center and the Department of Neighborhoods (DON) reached an agreement to house a DON sponsored P-Patch community garden on the roof of the Mercer Street parking garage. Hundreds of local volunteers helped construct the garden in the spring of 2012, and it became known as the UpGarden. It was the country’s first large-scale community rooftop garden open to the public.

Our Purpose and Community
Since that time, the UpGarden P-Patch has welcomed hundreds of local urban gardeners and thousands of visitors, provided instructive and project space to hundreds of school children, and produced thousands of pounds of fresh vegetables for local shelters and food banks. In 2014, UpGarden took the top award from the Washington Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. It is one of the most used and productive "open spaces" - an oasis in the Uptown neighborhood which was recently rezoned as a ‘high density’ area that is absorbing thousands of new high-rise apartment units currently under construction.

Time is Very, Very Short
On October 22, members of the UpGarden community received an eviction letter notifying us that we must vacate our home on the garage rooftop by Fall 2020. We believe the Center is terminating their agreement with the DON and evicting the P-Patch for the primary purpose of reclaiming approximately 100 parking spaces, and with no regard to the effects on the neighborhood, gardeners, residents, quality of life, pollution, traffic and congestion. There is currently no plan to re-locate the garden.

Reverse the Decision
What Seattle's Uptown neighborhood really needs is green open spaces that serve our community, not more parking spaces. The UpGarden P-Patch gardeners and volunteers, surrounding neighbors, and supporters are asking all parties to the original agreement (Seattle Center, DON, the P-Patch Program) to reverse their decision, and therefore leave the agreement for the space now known as the UpGarden in force for as long as the Mercer Street Garage is operating.

Show Your Support
It is time to let our voices be heard by our elected officials and to marshal all of the support that we can muster from them and the community to save the UpGarden P-Patch. This petition was created by UpGarden gardeners and community members. Please join us by signing this petition and spreading the word. If you have any questions, contact us at website@upgarden.org. Thank you!
