Wildlife Protection
The Issue
On Wednesday April 20, 2016 the DEEP ( Department of Energy and Environmental Protection) of Connecticut captured and euthanized a male swan and "addled" his unborn children off of Five Mile river in Killingly after they received two complaints that the swan was "aggressive". On April 17, days before the swan was euthanized and his offsprings eggs were damaged, kayakers had paddled close to the swans nest, got scared, and were chased away by the male. Several witnesses had seen the kayakers swinging their oars at the swan in an attempt to make him fly away. The swan did not back off seeing the kayakers as a threat to his family. No signs are posted around the nest and no public education has been given in regards to these wild animals who have used the river as their home for over 30 years. Other measures could have been taken by the DEEP to protect these animals. Justice needs to be sought to not only protect these majestic animals, but for wild animals who are losing their life when they're acting in their habitat.
