"Illinois judge who reversed sexual assault ruling awaits fate after disciplinary hearing," By Jonathan Bullington, Chicago Tribune • Published: Nov 12, 2023 at 5:00 am
This is a really well-written report that states factual information about this past week's hearing. It lays out what the defense said and what the prosecution said, along with statements made by several attendees and Robert Adrian himself. For those of us who were unable to attend in person, people who were in attendance keeping written documentation and then sharing that information is a key facet of transparency for judicial proceedings.
This cause has been so blessed to be afforded coverage by the persons with access to platforms that far exceed the capabilities we have any immediate access to ourselves. ...When media attention is garnered for any unpleasant reason, it immediately becomes a double-edged sword. Being recognized personally for attachment to a trauma can be intensely stigmatizing and an uncomfortable burden to shoulder. But without awareness and recognition of the problem, how would we begin to address it? How would we gather enough people together who were all aware of the same problem in the same moment without climbing to all the tallest treetops and screaming from the top of our lungs? It worked for Paul Revere. Benjamin Franklin would approve.
Media attention is no enemy to democracy.
The enemy of democracy is desiring to keep people ignorant and misinformed. The enemy of democracy is trying to shame people out of using the tools they have at their disposal to communicate and share ideas. And while we obviously wish there had not been a negative reason motivating all of the media attention this cause has garnered, that attention is an effect, not a cause. The cause of that effect is Robert Adrian's words and actions on January 3, 2022, when he broke the law.
We can not say thank-you enough to all of the journalists and media professionals who have been such an integral part of not letting this story get swept under the rug, just like the countless other like-stories that are getting swept under the rug.
Thank you,
