Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) is forcing the closure of Gulf Adventure Center @ Gulf State Park/Hummingbird Ziplines on 01 October 2016.
In 2013, we entered into the first private/public partnership with Alabama DCNR under a 12 year contract. This contract was reviewable at each 4 year increment. The contract would renew by mutual agreement with 2 exceptions: malfeasance or the development of the property for the proposed Gulf State Park Lodge. We, the private entity, invested over $750,000.00 to construct a world class Zipline course.
In the 3 1/2 years we have been in operation we have maintained the status of the number one outdoor activity on the Alabama Gulf Coast on Trip Advisor. More than 50,000 Alabama residents and visitors have participated in the Zipline adventure. Many of the participants were first time visitors to the Alabama State Park system. Many have returned for a second, third and even fourth visit.
We have created a "family" for our 8 full time and 48 part time employees. It is with pride that we can say that many have been with us since our doors opened. This GAC family is credited with creating lifelong memories for all of our guests. Just ask them. Each one left our adventure with a fonder appreciation of our environment and the wildlife inhabitants of the Alabama Gulf Coast.
In an area filled with seasonal attractions, Gulf Adventure Center has provided a year round opportunity for visitors to experience the incredible natural resources on our coast. We have also been able to keep a limited staff employed year round.
We have generated over $300,000.00 in income for Gulf State Park. In recent months, several locations in the Alabama State Parks system have closed due to lack of funding. Why would you close the NUMBER ONE outdoor attraction while it is generating dollars for a system obviously in need of the funds? No one has answered that question.
Will additional services be cut within the parks with the loss of income caused by our closure?
Please help us stay in operation for all of these reasons. Sign our petition and let your voice be heard.
