We the undersigned call on Swansea City Council to use the powers at its disposal to protect The Palace Theatre from further decay and ensure the building’s survival for future generations.

We the undersigned call on Swansea City Council to use the powers at its disposal to protect The Palace Theatre from further decay and ensure the building’s survival for future generations.
The Issue
We the undersigned call upon the Leader of Swansea City Council and the Cabinet Member for Enterprise, Development and Regeneration to:
- Update the wider community on discussions to date, and with more detail beyond ‘positive confidential discussions’;
- Further to the Council’s generous grant funding of £75,000 to the Palace owners, to support urgent work to help begin urgent repair work to the building. To update the wider community on when and how that money will be spent, and for how long the funding shall be available for.
- Enter into a transparent dialogue - with agreed defined timelines - and ensure the Palace Theatre is maintained and restored as a viable structure within the city centre.
- Actively seek consultation and engagement with local and national organisations involved with theatre and listed building, Such as The Theatres Trust for professional advice and support in restoring the Palace building
As volunteers and supporters who back the preservation of The Palace Theatre, we stand ready to engage with the Council and Landlords, and look forward to hearing from you as to how all parties can proceed.
Past, Present and Future
The Palace is an iconic building and has been many things to many people since 1888.
As Swansea City Centre gets remapped, rebuilt and modernised into a 'European Boulevard City', The Palace's continued presence on High Street stands as an important reminder of the City's culture and the debt it owes to its past.
Recent and continued investment in Swansea City Centre, particularly the proposed Creative Hub and refurbishment of Parc Tawe nearby, is a positive show of confidence in the area.
Whilst we welcome the ushering in of the ‘new’, we believe it is vital for the City’s culture and diversity to also value and preserve the ‘old’.
There is an immense appetite to conserve our local history and to create a space for local community groups and interests. Furthermore, we have a large body of support to call upon, and can also cite other local interest groups who are engaged in similar activities to preserve other notable landmarks and buildings.
We call on Swansea Council to use the powers at its disposal to protect The Palace Theatre from further decay and ensure the building’s survival for future generations, and to work with The Palace Theatre’s landlords, to achieve a timely resolution.
As volunteers and supporters who back the preservation of The Palace Theatre, we stand ready to engage with the Council and Landlords, and look forward to hearing from you as to how all parties can proceed.
