I wouldn't either. Please contact Larry Weis (General Manager of Seattle City Light), Sephir Hamilton (Chief of Staff of Seattle City Light) and Rob Johnson (City Councilman for District #4) and say that the proposed project will result in a significant change in the retail and pedestrian character of the area. Please feel free to email me for any assistance (jessicatjackson@gmail.com). They will likely make a final decision next week.
Note: The City cannot make a permit decision based on health effects. The 1996 Telecommunications Act deems a certain amount of RF electromagnetic radiation safe, and it preempts local municipalities from making permit decisions based on health effects. However, the project cannot be permitted if it results in a significant change to the retail or pedestrian character of the commercial area (See SMC 23.57.012). Therefore, we need to address this. Examples:
--The project will be 15 feet from the sidewalk tables of the Bryant Corner Cafe. People won't want to eat and gather here anymore.
--A 70-foot utility pole will almost inevitably have a larger diameter than the existing utility pole. The sidewalk is already very narrow. Would a larger utility pole impede pedestrians passing by? Wheelchairs?
This photo shows an example of a Seattle City Light utility pole with T-Mobile communications equipment affixed to the top. (This example is on Roosevelt Way NE, just south of Northgate Way, next to Walgreens.) The proposed project by the Bryant Corner Cafe will likely be the same or very similar to this example.
The final decision as to whether or not to permit the cell tower will be made very soon, so please reach out and contact decision-makers. A last push will help!
