Roanoke City Council & Traffic Engineering: Install crosswalks and crossing lights at dangerous intersections around Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

On November 29th, well-known oncologist and humanitarian, Dr. Gerald Schertz, died from injuries he sustained while crossing one of several dangerous intersections surrounding Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
In the area directly in front of RMH, there are six named roads going in different directions. The area has heavy bus traffic, with both the Valley Metro and Star Trolley making multiple stops around RMH. There are also ambulances and private vehicles constantly arriving at the emergency department and visitors arriving at the main entrance of RMH. The area is also frequently congested with patients and visitors to numerous other healthcare facilities within a two block radius of RMH. In addition to the motor vehicle traffic, there are also thousands of pedestrians crossing the various unmarked intersections (the worst being the intersection of Jefferson St. and McClanahan St. and the intersection of Jefferson St. and Weller Lane, where Dr.Schertz was killed). Although there is constant motorist and pedestrian traffic at both intersections, neither has a marked crosswalk or a crossing light.
We are petitioning the city of Roanoke for marked crosswalks as well as crossing lights at these intersections and for additional police presence in the area to cite drivers that do not yield to pedestrians.
