Road to Safety: Advocating for Life-Saving Changes in Our Community

The Issue

Hi! We are two students at White Hill Middle School in Fairfax, CA and residents of San Anselmo, CA. (Willow Benham, 14, and Natori Gomez, 13). As members of our community, we are aware of the dangerous driving and activity that occurs in the streets of downtown San Anselmo.

Our goal with this petition is to make sure we bring awareness to speeding and illegal u-turns. Safety with every pedestrian, biker, and driver on the streets of downtown San Anselmo is important to us and this tight knit community. We are aware that there is already signage on the streets issuing these topics, however there is still frequent dangerous driving activity on the daily. As the whole community is aware about car safety at the moment, we would like to contribute to this cause and help to prevent accidents in the future.

Illegal u-turns and speeding are becoming increasingly dangerous issues in downtown San Anselmo, posing significant threats to the safety and well-being of our community's residents and visitors. The busy streets of our beloved town should be a haven for families, children, and workers, not a hazard due to reckless driving behaviors.

Recently, there have been numerous incidents and near misses caused by drivers making illegal u-turns and speeding through our streets. These actions not only endanger the lives of pedestrians but also contribute to a heightened risk of accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding was a contributing factor in 26% of all traffic fatalities in 2019. By addressing these issues locally, we can make San Anselmo a safer place for everyone.

We urge local authorities, including the San Anselmo Police Department and town council, to take decisive actions such as installing more visible traffic signs, increasing police patrols during peak hours, and implementing stricter penalties for traffic violations, particularly illegal u-turns and speeding offenses. By doing so, we can deter drivers from engaging in these dangerous activities and protect our community’s safety.

In addition, community awareness campaigns can play a vital role in educating residents and drivers about the potential consequences of these traffic violations, fostering a culture of road safety and responsibility.

Let’s ensure the safety of our beautiful town. Sign this petition to call on our local leaders to impose necessary measures that will make a real difference in keeping our streets safe for everyone.
