RLASD BOE FAILED HAUGEN!!!! Haugen Elementary open for at least five more years
The Issue
UPDATE:
VOTE NO ON THE REFERENDUM IN APRIL!
It is with a very heavy heart that I am sharing with you this update. The Rice Lake Area School District Board of Education made the careless , irresponsible and biased decision at the October 26th Board meeting to close the Haugen Elementary at the end of this school year without exhausting all of their options first.
With this being said, I am now redirecting this petition to vote NO on the referendum they will be asking for in April!
They failed the Haugen Community, staff and students and we need to show them we will not support them since they did not support us.
Our community in the Rice Lake Area School District is facing an impending decision that threatens the very fabric of our lives. Haugen Elementary School, a cornerstone of our community and education system, is at risk of closing. This decision comes as the district proposes a multi million dollar referendum to be on April 2027 ballot, yet it dismisses alternative options that could keep our beloved school open, such as enforcing the new boundary lines to boost enrollment.
Haugen Elementary isn’t just a building; it’s a place where young minds are nurtured, families come together, and community spirit thrives. Closing it down without exploring all possible solutions is not just short-sighted—it’s dismissive of the values and needs of our community. Our children deserve access to quality education, which they have continually received at Haugen Elementary.
Enforcing the new boundary lines is a feasible solution with the potential to increase student numbers effectively. It could offset the enrollment challenges without resorting to closure, giving our community a much-needed respite and time to find sustainable, long-term solutions. We owe it to our children to explore these avenues fully, rather than displacing them from an environment where they feel valued and secure.
The decision to close Haugen Elementary is not only a matter of education quality but also one of community integrity and heritage. The school is a historical pillar—our parents attended, we attended, and we wish the same for future generations.
Remember, the upcoming referendum aims to secure funding for the district's needs. But it is crucial to strike a balance between financial sustainability and the educational welfare of our children. A decision made purely from a financial standpoint risks undermining the trust and goodwill of the very residents whose votes will determine the referendum’s success.
By keeping Haugen Elementary open for at least five more years, we not only maintain stability for our children but also uphold our community’s values and future.
I urge the school district to reconsider the closure of Haugen Elementary. Allow the community to implement the new boundary lines and witness their potential impact before making any irreversible decisions. We, the concerned citizens, commit not to support the proposed referendum unless assurances are made for Haugen Elementary’s continued operation.
