River Mole Footbridge

River Mole Footbridge
The Issue
We, the residents and friends of the Hersham and West End communities, are keen to engage stakeholders to start discussions about the creation of a simple, safe wooden footbridge with handrails over the River Mole.
This proposed footbridge would connect the Hersham side of the river with Garsons Farm and West End, creating a safe and practical pedestrian crossing point between two closely linked communities.
At present, people travelling on foot between Hersham and West End are required to use the busy Hersham Bypass. This route is unpleasant and, for many users, unsafe. A modest footbridge at this location would provide a safer alternative and encourage walking, cycling, jogging, and access to local green spaces.
Why this bridge matters:
• Improves safety by avoiding the busy bypass
• Supports pedestrians, cyclists, joggers, and dog walkers
• Provides easier access from Hersham to Garsons Farm, West End, the Prince of Wales pub, and Esher Common
• Allows West End and Esher residents safer access to Hersham’s shops, pubs, play areas, and amenities including Waitrose and the Hersham Shopping Centre
• Encourages healthier, more sustainable local travel
This petition is intended solely to demonstrate community interest and demand. It is not a demand for immediate construction. If sufficient local support is shown, the intention is to engage constructively with Elmbridge Borough Council and Surrey County Council to explore feasibility, permissions, environmental considerations, and funding.
We recognise that cooperation with landowners, including Garsons Farm, would be essential and that any proposal would need to be developed sensitively and collaboratively.
By signing this petition, you are simply showing your support for exploring the idea of a safe footbridge that brings Hersham and West End closer together.
