The Issue

I am a self-employed drama practitioner and actor, working in primary and special schools introducing Shakespeare. (More importantly FINDING THE WILL works with children to improve their self-esteem, confidence, focus, listening and teamwork skills). I'm not new to this, I've been an actor, paying taxes and never claiming benefits for 35 years. There are millions of self-employed people like me, who have built up a business at which we are successful and financially independent. Until now....Coronavirus has stopped our businesses in their tracks. And now we are being treated unfairly.  The Job Retention Scheme has been extended but there is no sign that the Self Employment Income Support Scheme will be similarly extended. Are we not as important to the economy? Are our services less useful? Self-employment extends to personal trainers, window cleaners, musicians, management consultants, gig economy workers, to name but a few, as well as actors. directors and drama practitioners like myself. In normal times, we cost the state nothing, Some of us (and it has been a lottery) have received a taxable grant for March to May but what now? We won't be able to work for months, yet we still have rent, mortgages and bills to pay. Please extend the SEISS until August at least, just as you have done with the furloughing scheme....it may not save all of our businesses, but it might go some way to saving our mental health.
