The Issue

I respectfully express concern over the proposed removal of the handball courts at Rio Hondo Park, a valued community space since the 1970s. These courts hold deep personal and cultural significance, especially due to a mural I helped create as a teen that continues to represent local pride. Despite past renovations and funds that where grantedto fixed the handball courts, the courts have never been properly restored, and recent safety concerns I reported went unanswered. The courts remain an important place for recreation and community connection as they still get used, especially as other amenities have disappeared. Replacing them with additional parking, this park has already got remodeled before and was done smaller by removing other courts and playgrounds due to adding more parking space —despite existing options—would take away a meaningful resource for local residents. I urge reconsideration of this decision and encourage repairing and preserving the courts instead.
