Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus abuses their animals.
The Issue
Animals in circuses are not trained through positive reinforcement, as the public is led to believe.
The elephants in Ringling Bros. Circus are hit, beaten, and jabbed with sharp hooks, sometimes until they bleed. Ringling separates baby elephants from their motheres to break their spirits and viciously train them to perform. Uninformed circus goers don't know about the violent training sessions with ropes, bullhooks, and electric shock prods that are used on the elephants, and the point of this petition is to make sure EVERYONE is informed. Proof of the terrible abuse these elephants suffer is available all over the internet, through articles, pictures and videos.
Big cats are not treated any better. They are made to wear heavy chains around their necks, and they are beaten with sticks when they do not perform accordingly. Bears are beaten with long poles, and monkeys are hit with riding crops or violently kicked. Trainers have been documented using blowtorches on elephants. These animals spend days on end in extremely hot and cold weather, and often deprived of food, water and veterinary care. They are kept in cramped cages that are left dirty and full of disease.
Ringling Bros. advertizes that it travels more than 25,000 miles each year, touring for 11 months out of 12. This means its animals are kept locked in their cramped cages through all sorts of weather conditions. Documents from the circus itself admit that elephants are chained between 60-100 hours at a time. As for the big cats, their cages are not even big enough for them to turn around. Sometimes, Ringling even keeps two big cats in one cage.
"In July 2004, Clyde, a young lion traveling with Ringling, died in a poorly ventilated boxcar while the circus was crossing the Mojave Desert, where temperatures reached at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit." His death was reportedly due to dehydration and heatstroke. There are other reports of big cats hurting themselves while trying to escape from overheated box cars.
THE ONLY WAY TO PUT AN END TO THE ABUSE IS TO PUT AN END TO RINGLING BROS. BARNUM & BAILEY CIRCUS. Stop buying tickets. Tell everyone you know to stop buying tickets. If this petition gets enough signatures, IT WILL GET THEIR ATTENTION. It will also ensure that everyone is informed as to what goes on behind the scenes at the circus.
