Right to Ride on NH66

Right to Ride on NH66
The Issue
To:
The Regional Director
National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)
Kerala Region
Subject: Request for Consideration to Permit 600cc+ Motorcycles on NH66 Main Carriageway
Respected Sir/Madam,
We, the undersigned citizens and responsible motorcyclists of Kerala, respectfully submit this petition regarding the proposed restriction on two-wheelers from accessing the main carriageway of the newly upgraded NH66.
While we understand and support efforts to improve safety and traffic flow, we strongly urge the NHAI to consider an exception for motorcycles with engine capacities above 600cc, based on the following grounds:
1. High Road Tax Contribution: Motorcycles priced above ₹2 lakhs are taxed at 22% in Kerala—one of the highest in India. Riders of such bikes are major contributors to road revenue.
2. Built for Highways: Motorcycles above 600cc are engineered for stable highway cruising and are on par with passenger cars in terms of speed and braking capabilities.
3. Infrastructural Limitations: Service roads may be narrow, congested, and unsafe for high-powered motorcycles, especially in regions where infrastructure is incomplete.
4. Precedent from Other States: States like Maharashtra and Karnataka have adopted conditional access policies for high-displacement motorcycles on expressways.
We request that:
• Motorcycles above 600cc be permitted on the NH66 main lanes.
• Riders of such motorcycles follow additional safety protocols if necessary (e.g., high-visibility jackets, helmets with certification, speed limits).
• Discussions be held with rider communities for consensus-based policy implementation.
We remain open to constructive dialogue and seek a fair resolution.
