Melvindale High Water Bill Crisis
The Issue
Melvindale residents have a huge problem that needs to be solved. Our water bills have spiked up to a point where it is getting really hard for citizens to pay them. We have been told that it is bond debt, bad water pipes, wholesale fixed water rates. Citizens don't really know what is really happening except that our water bills have been doubling and tripling.
The Great Lakes water Commission charges us more than the other communities because we are a small community. Our city uses much less water then we are forced to buy per month. Cities like Flint,Detroit, and Highland Park debt was divided with all the cities in the area and we are still paying their debt. Why can't you do the same for our debt? Why doesn't the state provide us with funding to change our pipes? Is there a way for us to merge our water bills with another city to lower the whole sale price?
In cities like Wyandotte residents pay $50 dollars every two months, while in Melvindale residents pay $770 for three months. In Dearborn a family of 5 pays around $150-$200. A family of 2 seniors had to pay around $600 this last bill period. In other cities people are very generous with the water. They water their grass and do the laundry everyday. In Melvindale, seniors use the toilet multiple times before they flush.
It's sad when a resident cannot afford clean water. Many residents have to choose between water or food and medication. We are requesting your help in anyway possible to make water affordable for us again. Any help you can get us is sincerely appreciated.
