Open voter registration for the Colorado caucuses

The Issue

Registration to participate in the Colorado caucus closed on January 4th, but the caucus takes place on March 1st. Many voters are still deciding or only recently decided on their candidate and party affiliation.

Every day, Colorado citizens are calling precincts to inquire whether they can still register to caucus on March 1st. This tells us many voters did not know about the deadline until it was too late. Further, newcomers to the political process and those who were undecided on their candidate back in January will be excluded from the Colorado caucus by this unnecessary restriction UNLESS WE ACT NOW.

This petition is addressed to the Colorado Democratic Party and state representatives to let them know that their constituencies are ready for an inclusive registration rule. We call on the Colorado Democratic Party to open registration now so that undecided voters can register with their party and vote for their candidate the same day they caucus. The current registration system, put in place in 2013, disenfranchises too many would-be caucus-goers. Update the registration requirement to include the maximum number of voters by allowing eligible Colorado citizens to register today, tomorrow, and on March 1st at their precinct!

I'd like to add to my previous response, since I want to make sure folks understand if people register to vote as Unaffiliated, they aren't members of any party. The requirement was that those people change their registration from Unaffiliated to a specific party in order to participate in caucus. County parties run the caucuses. Anyone who had already registered with a particular party ANY TIME before January 4 needs only to show up at their caucus location. You can check with your county clerk or with your county party to find out where your caucus location is. Best, Jonathan Singer, HD11
