The Issue

50 Shades of Gray is a film that tells women and teenage girls it's sexually acceptable to allow men to tie them, beat them, and abuse them. This is a horrible message we don't want to see promoted in our hometown movie theater, Royal Cinemas. 50 Shades glamorizes porn, which harms women, ruins marriages, and destroys lives. It poisons normal sexual relationships. Porn constitutes an addiction that is ruining the lives of millions of men. For young men, it can lead to sexual dysfunction, isolation, and profound unhappiness.

We want to support local businesses and we care about the choices they make. Rather than call for a boycott, we will attempt to provide financial incentive for Royal Cinemas to pull the film: if Royal Cinemas shows 50 Shades, the undersigned will see our next three movies at another theater instead of at Royal Cinemas, and encourage our friends and family to do the same. We don't want to hurt the owner or employees of Royal Cinemas, but mainstreaming porn in a romantic movie marketed on Valentine's Day is a new low that our local community just doesn't have to support. Making porn look glamorous and romantic isn't gray. It's dark. And ugly.
