Better Long Term Healthcare for the Elderly

Long term health care. Need more staff and need management that knows what they are doing! All long term nursing facilities are under staffed and need more staffing for patients/residence. Management needs to be better trained on the attention needed for patients/residence.
Many of the elderly and their families won’t complain for fear of retribution and management ignors. This is when I realised the lack of staff ratios was a huge problem. With no mandated staff / resident ratios in aged care facilities across Chatham-Kent, our elders are at risk of abuse and neglect not by choice of staff but forced.
What I see is a system that needs changing. Over-worked staff are stressed and undervalued.
In many aged care homes, one staff member can care for 14 or more residents with residents waiting for long periods to receive the care they urgently need by overstretched carers and nurses who feel that they can never get the job done.
Ontario is experiencing an unprecedented surge in seniors who require care with all levels of daily activity, who are living with dementia and/or mental health disorders, and who need to be cared for somewhere more suitable than a hospital bed and more safely than at home. But health policy seems to have largely forgotten that seniors’ needs matter.
This issue has been brought to my attention by fellow workers at nursing homes. Some examples of the neglect are residence not being bathed, have breakfast then have lunch a hour later due to breakfast being so late. Management ignores these issues and dont do anything to fix it! This is unacceptable and PSWs want this to be changed and will continue to follow up on these issues until resolved. They want and NEED CHANGE!
