Help Caregivers Receive Support and Education

The Issue

A "family caregiver" is anyone who provides any type of physical and/or emotional care for an ill or disabled loved one at home. Loved ones in need of care, could be suffering from a physical or mental illness, disability, substance misuse, or any other conditions. My petition is aimed to make our community aware of the lack of education and support there are for caregivers in Georgetown, ON. Many caregivers receive very little education on the disease that they are caring for and also obtain little to no community support. For example, support groups for the caregivers and/or community PSW care for their loved ones which would allow for the caregiver to receive a break.

Being a caregiver is a very difficult job and many are at risk of "caregiver burnout." Care giving can be extremely stressful and may cause anxiety, sometimes leading to social isolation and/or physical exhaustion. It is important that caregivers care for themselves as well, allowing breaks as this job can have a large detrimental impact on their mood, spirit and overall health.

Georgetown would benefit from having a "Alzheimer Society of Halton" office located in town; as families and caregivers would have a local centre for support and education.
