Stop scallop dredgers destroying the Summer Isles and safeguard the seabeds, islands, wildlife, work and culture!
The Issue
The Summer Isles are a unique and scenic location of significance in terms of eco-diversity and maritine, historical and cultural importance.
Plans are being considered by the Scottish Government and Marine Scotland to establish a Marine Protection Area (MPA) here but we fear this will be lackluster and ineffectual unless there is a show of strength to demonstrate people are behind the proposals and want to ensure there is support, backbone and political guts to stop scallop dredging in the area - a technique that destroys the reefs and nursery grounds of this small but amazing part of our coast and environment.
Attempts to protect the area are futile unless dredging is stopped. Dredging destroys reefs and sea beds that provide breeding grounds and haven to sea life, fish and shellfish that provide work for more sustainable fishing techniques such as creels, diving and angling along with wildlife tours, recreational diving and nature watching and are also crucial to the food chain that support sea birds, marine life, seals, dolphin, whales, basking shark and a multitude of wildlife, some of which are endangered and not only live here but migrate all over the country and world.
We are asking for your support to call on a ban on dredging in the islands in the hope that we can attempt to protect these isles and waters for future generations to work, appreciate, visit and live among for years to come.
Please sign this and support us so we can try to make a small but potentially significant step in demonstrating we (and you!) do actually care about our region and nature. Please help us try.
